What is Tadelakt?
Tadelakt is a form of polished plaster made from marble dust. It is used to plaster everything from walls to statues, decorative pots to moroccan lamps and trinket dishes or trinket boxes. The same basis is used each time but it is dyed each time for the desired colour. It is the traditional coating of the palaces, hamams and bathrooms of Morocco.
Once the plaster has been applied and has dried, it is polished with a river stone to achieve a sheen and treated with 'savon noir' to acquire its final appearance and water resistant qualities. Savon noir is a Moroccan soap made from olive oil based on an ancient and secret Berber recipe.
Tadelakt can also be carved to give a patterned effect. |
