What is Djellaba?
The djellaba is a long, loosely fitting hooded outer robe with full sleeves and a baggy pointed hood called a 'cob' which in a woman’s djellaba is normally finished with a tassle [see photo]. The hood was originally designed to protect the wearer from the sun and sandstorms and was sometimes used as a form of pocket for carrying bread.
They come in a huge variety of shapes and colors and are worn by both men and women. In winter they come in thicker woollen materials, in the summer thinner cotton. Traditionally Moroccan men also wear a red fez hat and soft yellow slippers or “baboosh” with their djellaba. A woman’s djellaba can come in very elaborate designs with vibrant colours and finished with a row of Moroccan buttons.
